Cathedral of Santa María la Antigua
The Cathedral of Santa María la Antigua is the seat of the Archdiocese of Panama, located in the Casco Antiguo of the City of Panama, facing Independence Square. Its construction began in 1688 and was completed in 1786. The Cathedral is a National Historic Monument and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Due to its state of conservation, the Government of Panama has established a comprehensive Restoration and Enhancement plan, which has been approved by public historical heritage agencies.
Once construction works started, architect Andres Schulman undertakes responsibility for the technical monitoring of the Cathedral’s restoration as UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services) Urban Architecture Restoration Expert.
